  • Armed Forces and Emergency Services

    Working for the armed forces and emergency services includes a huge number of very varied positions which you could work in. In general they offer structured paths for career development but each job requires different skills and qualifications.   • Creative Arts and Culture

    art.gifAs you can imagine this would suit someone who is creative and enjoys making things. If you are interested in fashion, art, music or something similar then this could be the sector for you. Although you should be aware that this is a difficult sector to break into and will require hard work to succeed.

  • Energy and Utilities

    atom.gifThis is a rapidly growing sector which is always developing as we get new technologies and need to develop new resources. An interest in geography or science would help in this sector, but the roles within this career are so varied that there are a number of jobs you could get into.

  • Engineering and Manufacturing

There are also many jobs available as there aren’t enough qualified engineers.   • IT and Information Services

    computer.gifThe IT sector is likely to grow a lot over the next few years and IT skills are hugely in demand from employers so getting to grips with different software and programming skills will put you in a great position for getting a job. There are a number of large employers in the Reading area who offer excellent training programs and are worth looking into. This sector offers a high salary and opportunities to be self-employed.

  • Marketing, Advising and PR

    pr.gifThese kind of roles exist in businesses in almost all sectors and they help to connect businesses or companies with their audiences. It is likely to be office based work and a sociable atmosphere. In general starting salaries are not that high but the hours are regular. The sector is competitive though, so bear in mind that you might end up getting a lot of rejections in this area.

  • Media and Publishing

    Both these sectors are developing along with technology so some familiarity with computers or IT would be useful. Media is much larger than publishing. A career in this sector would be good for someone who is interested in the english language, reading and communication. You should also be good at working to deadlines and targets.

  • Property and Construction

    tools.gifThis sector did badly in the recession but it is expected to pick up in the next few years. There is a wide range of jobs available here. In general it would suit someone who enjoys creating things and working outside and with their hands. There is also some opportunity for setting up your own business once you have gained experience.

  • Public Sector

    This means working for the Government or the Civil Service. You will work for one of the main departments depending on your interest and Reading Borough Council is one of the largest employers in Reading. The work varies depending on the department that you are working for and is primarily desk based office work, usually 9-5.

  • Retail and Sales

    shopping.gifThis would suit someone who enjoys working with other people. You are going to be doing a lot of customer facing work so being friendly and getting on with all types of people is really important. This is likely to be shift based work that can mean you may work on weekends, and the salary is very varied depending on where you work. But this is a sector that does not require you to have qualifications, although experience is useful.

  • Recruitment and HR

    This sector is about employment and putting other people in new jobs or dealing with employees in a company. Most companies in the UK will have an HR department so there are a variety of environments you could be working in. You will usually be working in a small team and will probably be based in an office. However, there is a lot of competition for jobs in this sector so it may mean lots of rejections so be prepared.

  • Transport and Logistics

    car.gifThis is a growing sector and a huge number of jobs are likely to become available in the next ten years. You are likely to have the opportunity to travel a great deal and a number of large employers are based in Reading.
